When the updated edition of the HCSB is released in 2010, those pesky lower brackets will be gone! Currently the HCSB uses lower brackets to “indicate words supplied for clarity by the translators.” This is similar to the practice other translations have of using italics to indicate words not in the original.
It would seem that supplying English words that are not in the original languages is simply a part of the translation process, so fans of the HCSB have expressed frustration with the annoying little brackets. Thankfully, the updated edition will lose the brackets.
Some other positive changes coming to the updated edition include:
- “Deluge” in Genesis 6 will go back to “flood.”
- “Atmospheric domain” in Ephesians 2 will change to “lower heavens.”
- “Beroea” in Acts 17 will revert to the traditional “Berea.”
Apparently there will be some other excellent changes in the update, but B&H Publishing is not planning on making a big deal about a Second Edition release like Zondervan/Biblica is doing with the NIV. They are simply going to make an excellent translation just a little bit better.

Will, I know their position on the not using the term tongues places where it is used to describe a particular spiritual gift (i.e 1 Cor. 12-14), but can they at least reconsider rewording this one verse?

Do the translators really believe that is the intended meaning, “languages will cease”? I am not all advocating the use of tongues but they need to clarify this verse, and translated better. It is just a really awkward reading, that seems to make no sense at all.
Other translations:
NLT: unknown languages … will become useless
ESV: tongues, they will cease
TNIV: where there are tongues, they will be stilled
CEV: unknown languages will no longer be spoken
NET: if there are tongues, they will cease

Thanks for the update. In the last email I received from Dr. Blum he re-stated the publishers desire to retain those “pesky” black bullets imbedded in the text. Now, if they would just get rid of those as well, we would be one step closer to that (almost) perfect translation.
